Business Tax Filing for Washington
Federal returns, excise filings, city B&O. One team, fixed fees.
Washington has no state income tax, which is where most of the confusion starts. There is no state return that mirrors your federal one, but there is a Business and Occupation tax charged on gross receipts whether or not you made a profit, a city B&O return in several of the larger municipalities, and an annual report that has nothing to do with either. Orbit prepares your federal return and holds every Washington deadline on the same calendar.
Why Washington business owners trust Orbit with their filings
Federal returns from reconciled books
Form 1120, 1120-S, 1065 or Schedule C prepared from the same ledger your excise returns come from. No state income tax return does not mean no tax work - it means the federal return carries more of the weight.
B&O classified correctly, not conveniently
B&O is charged on gross receipts at a rate that depends on the activity. Businesses with more than one revenue stream are often reporting everything under one classification, which is either overpaying or building an assessment.
City B&O as well as state
Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue and others run their own B&O taxes with their own thresholds and apportionment. A business can be under the threshold in one city and filing in two others.
One calendar for every deadline
The combined excise return, city filings, the annual report and business license renewal, and the federal return, all held together so none of them is somebody else's job.
Business tax filing in Washington, explained
What replaces the income tax return, and what it costs to get it wrong
Washington is not a no-tax state; it is a state that taxes something other than income. The Business and Occupation tax is charged on gross receipts, so it is owed by profitable and unprofitable businesses alike, and the rate depends on what you do rather than what you earned. Add city B&O in the larger municipalities and a licensing regime that runs separately again, and the compliance load is heavier than the headline suggests.
How Orbit Accountants works with your Washington Business
A clear path from first call to filed returns, with fixed fees and no surprises.
1. Discovery call
We map your revenue streams and their B&O classifications, which cities you may be in scope for, your filing frequency, and anything outstanding.
2. Tailored proposal (fixed fee)
Clear scope and timelines - cleanup if the books need it, then a filing calendar covering the federal return, the Department of Revenue, city B&O and licensing.
3. Welcome & kickoff
Orbit Portal access plus a checklist for the prior-year return, trial balance, excise account details and any assessments you have received.
4. System setup & mapping
QuickBooks Online or Xero with Dext or Hubdoc, and a chart of accounts that separates revenue by B&O classification from the start.
5. Catch-up & cleanup (if needed)
We reconcile accounts, correct prior classifications where they were wrong, and deal with unfiled excise returns before interest builds.
6. Monthly close
Bank, credit card and loan reconciliations, A/R and A/P aging, payroll posted, and a report pack delivered on a schedule you can plan around.
7. Excise and city filings
The combined excise return filed on your assigned frequency and reconciled to the books, with Seattle, Tacoma or Bellevue B&O filed alongside it.
8. Year-end, federal return and annual report
A clean year-end package, the federal return prepared and filed, and the annual report and license renewal submitted on time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Across the state. We work with businesses in Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, Spokane, Vancouver and the smaller markets in between. The work is remote, so where you are does not change the service or the fee.
A named accountant who knows your business, with a review before anything is filed. You are not routed to whoever is free that week, and you do not re-explain your business every time you have a question.
Your federal return, unchanged - Form 1120, 1120-S, 1065 or Schedule C. At state level, the combined excise return covering B&O, retail sales tax and use tax, plus city B&O where it applies, an annual report to the Secretary of State, and your business license renewal.
Yes. B&O is charged on gross receipts with no deduction for the cost of earning them, so an unprofitable year still produces a bill. That is why classification and available deductions matter far more here than profit-reducing strategies do.
Each stream belongs in its own B&O classification, because the rates differ significantly - service activity is taxed well above wholesaling, for example. We set the books up to capture revenue by classification as it is earned, so the split is supportable rather than estimated at filing time.
If you are over that city's threshold, yes, and it is a separate registration and filing from the state return. Service revenue is generally apportioned between where the work is done and where the customer receives the benefit, which is a real question for a remote team. We check which cities apply as you grow.
Rates follow the delivery address, so we keep rate tables and product mapping current in your billing system and reconcile what you collected against what you remit each period. Use tax on out-of-state purchases is reviewed at the same time.
Washington taxes long-term capital gains for individuals above an annual threshold, with a number of exclusions that can apply depending on what is being sold and how the deal is structured. It is a personal tax rather than a business one, and it is a conversation to have well before a transaction rather than after.
Reconciled books, a profit and loss, a balance sheet and a cash snapshot, plus the filings due that month. The report pack arrives on a set schedule so you can plan around it rather than chase it.
Under 20 days for most clients, and we tell you before onboarding what your close date will be. If a month is going to be late because we are waiting on something from you, you hear it from us first.
Yes. Bring it to the discovery call. Most assessments we see come from misclassified revenue or unfiled periods. We will tell you what it is, what it is likely to cost, and what can be corrected. Back filings are scoped and priced separately.
Fixed. You agree a fee before we start, and questions are included. We would rather you called than saved a question up until it became a problem.
Separately from the ongoing fee, and quoted once we have seen what is outstanding. We do not begin cleanup on an open-ended hourly arrangement.
