Bookkeeping Services for California Businesses
Monthly books reconciled to your franchise tax, LLC fee, CDTFA sales tax and EDD payroll. One calendar. One fixed fee.
CPA-level bookkeeping with fixed pricing, fast month-end closes, and a responsive California-based team - so you can focus on growth, not the CRA.
Why California business owners trust Orbit with their books
The $800 and the LLC fee, tracked all year
The $800 annual tax is owed whether or not you made money (new corporations get a pass in their first year), and the LLC fee jumps in steps rather than sliding. We track California revenue against the fee bands monthly, so the estimate is right and the bill is never a surprise.
Reporting you can act on
A monthly profit and loss, balance sheet and cash snapshot, delivered on a schedule you can plan around, with the detail your Form 568 or Form 100 and any pass-through election depend on. See fractional CFO in Los Angeles.
Sales tax across district rates
The statewide base rate is 7.25%. District taxes are added on top and follow where the goods are delivered. We keep the rate setup in your billing system current and reconcile tax collected against tax remitted to the CDTFA every period.
Payroll that keeps up with California's rules
EDD deposits and quarterly returns, SDI withheld on every dollar of wages (no cap since 2024), and an ABC-test review before any contractor is paid. Payroll is posted and reconciled in the ledger every period. See our payroll management service.
Bookkeeping in California, explained
The filings that catch owners out, and the thresholds worth watching all year
California is not an expensive state to operate in only because of its tax rates. It is expensive because several of its charges are owed regardless of profit, because the thresholds behind them arrive as cliffs rather than slopes, and because the deadlines sit on a calendar of their own. Books kept with those specifics in mind cost a great deal less than books reconstructed around them in March.

Across the state. We work with businesses in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Fresno and the smaller markets in between. The work is remote, so where you are does not change the service or the fee.
A named accountant who knows your business, with a review before anything is filed. You are not routed to whoever is free that week, and you do not re-explain your business every time you have a question.
Yes, in most cases. The annual tax is owed for existing, not for earning, so a dormant or loss-making LLC or corporation still owes it. The exception is a new corporation's first taxable year. If you are holding entities you no longer use, each one costs $800 a year until it is properly dissolved, so raise it early.
No. The waiver covered LLCs, LPs and LLPs for tax years 2021 through 2023, and it has lapsed. An LLC, LP or LLP formed now owes the $800 in its first year, due by the 15th day of the 4th month of that tax year. New corporations are different: they are exempt from the minimum franchise tax in their first taxable year.
It applies once an LLC's total California income reaches $250,000, and it is a flat amount per band, not a percentage: $900 from $250,000, $2,500 from $500,000, $6,000 from $1 million and $11,790 from $5 million. Because the bands are steps, crossing one by a single dollar can add up to $5,790 to the bill. We track your position monthly, so a threshold is a decision rather than a discovery.
It depends on each owner's position as much as the entity's, so we model it rather than assume it. The election now runs through the 2030 tax year. From 2026, missing the June 15 prepayment no longer blocks the election, but it reduces each owner's credit by 12.5% of the unpaid amount. The prepayment is the greater of $1,000 or 50% of last year's elective tax, so it is a cash-flow date worth planning for.
The statewide base rate is 7.25%. Counties and cities add district taxes on top, and those follow where the goods are delivered or first used. We keep rate tables and product taxability current in your billing system and reconcile tax collected against tax remitted to the CDTFA every period, reviewing use tax on out-of-state purchases at the same time.
It is a question worth answering properly. California generally uses the ABC test to decide whether someone is an employee or a contractor, and misclassification is assessed with back taxes, interest and penalties. We review how each relationship is set up before payments are coded, not after a notice arrives.
The cap on wages subject to State Disability Insurance ended in 2024, so SDI is now withheld from every dollar an employee earns. The 2026 rate is 1.3%. SDI is employee-funded: it comes out of paychecks, not the company's budget, so higher earners see a larger deduction all year. What matters for you is that payroll settings carry the current rate with no cap, or withholding and your EDD filings will not match. We check this every payroll cycle.
Reconciled books, a profit and loss, a balance sheet and a cash snapshot, plus the filings due that month. The report pack arrives on a set schedule so you can plan around it rather than chase it.
Yes. Bring it to the discovery call. Most of what we see comes from unfiled periods, a missed franchise tax payment or sales tax collected at the wrong rate. We will tell you what it is, what it is likely to cost, and what can be corrected. Back filings are scoped and priced separately.
Yes, and it is common in California - real estate and construction groups in particular often hold a number of LLCs. We keep each set of books separate, run one calendar across all of them so no entity's $800 or annual return is missed, and consolidate where you need a group view. See bookkeeping in Nevada.
Separately from the ongoing fee, and quoted once we have seen what is outstanding. We do not begin cleanup on an open-ended hourly arrangement. See our catch-up bookkeeping service.
