Why Nevada business owners trust Orbit with their books
Modified Business Tax filed quarterly
MBT is 1.17% of quarterly wages above $50,000, after the health care deduction many businesses never claim. Every employer files, even in a quarter with no tax due. We calculate it from payroll that is already posted and reconciled.
Reporting you can act on
A monthly profit and loss, balance sheet and cash snapshot, delivered on a schedule you can plan around, with Nevada gross revenue tracked separately so the Commerce Tax position is never a guess. See fractional CFO in Las Vegas.
Sales tax across county rates
Nevada's state rate is 6.85%, and counties add to it: 8.375% in Clark County and 8.265% in Washoe. The rate follows where the goods are delivered. We keep your rate setup current and reconcile tax collected against tax remitted every period.
The annual list and license, held
Your state business license and annual list are due by the last day of your formation anniversary month, not at year end, and a lapse affects your standing, not just your tax account. They sit on the same calendar as everything else.
Unemployment insurance, tied to MBT
Nevada unemployment insurance is reported to DETR's Employment Security Division every quarter, and MBT is calculated on the same gross wages. We reconcile the two before either is filed. See our payroll management service.
What replaces the income tax return, and the credits owners leave on the table
Nevada is not a no-tax state; it is a state that taxes something other than income. There is no corporate or personal income tax return at state level, and what stands in its place is a payroll tax charged quarterly, a gross revenue tax charged annually on a fiscal year that is not yours, and an annual license that renews on your formation date. None of them care whether you made a profit, and two of them interact in a way that is regularly missed.
How Orbit works with your Nevada business
A clear path from first call to reconciled books, with fixed fees and no surprises.
1. Discovery call
We map your payroll against the MBT threshold, where your Nevada gross revenue sits against the Commerce Tax threshold, your NAICS category, and anything outstanding.
2. Tailored proposal (fixed fee)
Clear scope and timelines - cleanup if the books need it, then a filing calendar covering the federal return, quarterly MBT, the Commerce Tax and your annual list.
3. Welcome & kickoff
Orbit Portal access plus a checklist for the prior-year return, trial balance, Department of Taxation account details and any notices you have received.
4. System setup & mapping
QuickBooks Online or Xero with Dext or Hubdoc, and a chart of accounts that tracks Nevada gross revenue and qualifying health care premiums separately from the start.
5. Catch-up & cleanup (if needed)
We reconcile accounts, recalculate prior MBT where the health care deduction was missed, and deal with unfiled periods before penalties build. See our catch-up bookkeeping service.
6. Monthly close
Bank, credit card and loan reconciliations, A/R and A/P aging, payroll posted, and a report pack delivered on a schedule you can plan around.
7. Quarterly and annual filings
MBT filed quarterly from reconciled payroll, sales tax on your assigned frequency, and the Commerce Tax return in August with the 50% credit carried into the quarters that follow.
8. Year-end, federal return and annual list
A clean year-end package, the federal return prepared and filed, and the annual list and state business license renewed in your anniversary month.
How the Commerce Tax Credit Works
The saving most Nevada businesses over $4 million leave on the table.
Step 1: Nevada's Commerce Tax year ends June 30.
Step 2: If Nevada gross revenue was over $4 million, the return is due 45 days later, usually August 14.
Step 3: 50% of the Commerce Tax you pay becomes a credit against MBT.
Step 4: The credit is used on the next four quarterly MBT returns.
Step 5: Any credit left after those four quarters expires. We prepare both returns from the same ledger, so it gets used.

- Commerce Tax threshold crossed and the August deadline missed
- Commerce Tax credit against MBT left unused and expired
- Annual list and license missed, standing at risk

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Nevada has no corporate or personal income tax, but most businesses still file MBT, sales tax and an annual list.
Yes. We file MBT every quarter from reconciled payroll, with the health care deduction and any Commerce Tax credit applied.
Yes. Both sit on your filing calendar for the last day of your formation anniversary month.
Yes. You agree a fixed monthly fee before we start, and any cleanup is quoted separately.
Under 20 days for most clients, on a close date agreed before onboarding.
Through the Orbit Portal: requests, uploads, approvals and status in one place.
Across the state. We work with businesses in Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Reno, Sparks and Carson City, and the smaller markets in between. The work is remote, so where you are does not change the service or the fee.
A named accountant who knows your business, with a review before anything is filed. You are not routed to whoever is free that week, and you do not re-explain your business every time you have a question.
Your federal return, unchanged - Form 1120, 1120-S, 1065 or Schedule C. At state level, the Modified Business Tax quarterly on wages, sales and use tax on your assigned frequency, the Commerce Tax annually if you are above the threshold, and your annual list and state business license with the Secretary of State.
For general businesses it is 1.17% of gross wages above $50,000 in a quarter, after deducting qualifying health care premiums paid for employees. That deduction is worth real money and is one of the items we most often find unclaimed. Every employer files the quarterly return, even when no tax is due. Financial institutions and mining businesses pay 1.554% with no $50,000 exclusion. Rates are set by the state and can change, so we check them each year. See our payroll management service.
Only if your Nevada gross revenue exceeds $4 million in the state's fiscal year, which ends June 30. At $4 million or below there is no filing requirement. The return is due 45 days after the fiscal year ends, usually August 14, a date that lines up with nothing else you file. That is why the first year over the threshold is the one that gets missed.
By your NAICS business category, and the spread is wide - roughly 0.051% to 0.331% depending on the industry. Your category is locked in on your first return and changing it later needs approval from the Department of Taxation on a separate form, so it is worth getting right at the outset.
Yes, and it is regularly missed. A business that pays Commerce Tax can credit 50% of it against Modified Business Tax in the following quarters, carried forward for up to four quarters. Because the two taxes are filed on different cycles and often by different people, the connection gets lost and the credit expires unused. We prepare both from the same ledger so it is applied automatically.
Usually less than people expect. Registering in Nevada does not by itself move your tax obligations here - if the work is performed and your customers are elsewhere, that state generally still expects a return, and the Nevada entity adds filings rather than removing them. It is a conversation worth having on the discovery call rather than after another state opens one. See bookkeeping in California.
Nevada's state rate is 6.85%, and counties add to it: 8.375% in Clark County and 8.265% in Washoe. The rate follows where the goods are delivered. We keep rate tables and product mapping current in your billing system and reconcile tax collected against tax remitted each period, with use tax on out-of-state purchases reviewed at the same time.
No. Nonprofits exempt under section 501(c) are excluded from the Modified Business Tax and exempt from the Commerce Tax. They still have Nevada filings of their own: see our nonprofit bookkeeping in Las Vegas page. Nonprofit bookkeeping in Las Vegas
Reconciled books, a profit and loss, a balance sheet and a cash snapshot, plus the filings due that month. The report pack arrives on a set schedule so you can plan around it rather than chase it.
Yes. Bring it to the discovery call. Most of what we see comes from unfiled periods, MBT calculated without the health care deduction, or a first Commerce Tax return that was never filed. We will tell you what it is, what it is likely to cost, and what can be corrected. Back filings are scoped and priced separately.
Yes. We keep each set of books separate, run one calendar across all of them so no entity's annual list or license renewal is missed, and consolidate where you need a group view.
Separately from the ongoing fee, and quoted once we have seen what is outstanding. We do not begin cleanup on an open-ended hourly arrangement. See our catch-up bookkeeping service.
